Program Description

To build computational skills with business insights, this designated STEM program explores emerging technologies and business practices in next-generation analytics, such as AI, ML, data pipeline, ITsystems, blockchain, business intelligence, and digital strategy. This program blends computer science skills with business applications to help students build core competencies and learn how to interpret analytical findings, uncover business-relevant insights, and advance their careers.

The innovative curriculum consists of rigorous courses that will help build your capabilities in technical, analytical, and operational areas to prepare your career with computer analytics and management skills. The Business Analytics major requires four sets of courses: lower-division core courses (10-11 units), upper-division core courses (33 units), courses to fulfill concentration requirements (18 units), and elective courses in individual interest. For qualified students, this program can be blended with an accelerated MBA pathway to receive an AACSB-accredited MBA Degree by taking 30 units of MBA core courses.

Information System and Supply Chain Analytics Concentration

The coursework in Information Systems and Supply Chain Analytics concentration integrates the knowledge from developing and managing information systems technology, designing value-added processes across various organizations involved in supplying goods or providing services, with analytics tools that are applied to discover, interpret and communicate meaningful information and patterns through analyzing data. Graduates of this concentration can radically design the supply chains to become more resilient, deploy information systems to create visibility and capture all available data sources, and utilize analytics to generate insights to improve organizations’ decision-making

Marketing Analytics Concentration

The “data explosion” in the business world has increased the need for analysts of all kinds and in all types of industries. Marketing management, advertising, digital marketing, data modeling, consumer insights, marketing communications - these are all possible fields for someone with skills and experience in marketing analytics. Students completing the coursework in the Marketing Analytics concentration acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to utilize a variety of analytical tools and applications for marketing decision-making in a digital and data-rich environment.  In particular, students will learn to view marketing through a customer-centric lens and advancing their analytics capabilities. They will learn how to leverage data and cutting-edge analytical tools for making strategic marketing decision and improving the effectiveness of marketing programs.

Career Opportunities

Recent demand for business analytics positions is on the rise, and there is seemingly no end in the next 10 years and beyond. While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not record statistics for the exact job title “Business Analyst”, it does track multiple job categories that fall under the broader umbrella of business analysis, including Management Analysts, Financial Analysts, Market Research Analysts, Operations Research Analysts, and so on. There are different growth expectations for various jobs in the field between 2020 and 2030. The projected job growth for management analysts, operations research analysts, and market research analysts is faster or much faster than the average projected growth for employment as a whole in the United States. It is expected that, in the next 10 years, the US will need 90,679 new jobs every year in the business analytics area. Among them, 18,135 or 20% of annual job openings are expected in California alone.

Student standing and progress toward degree

The proposed B.S. in Business Analytics program is designed to be completed in eight semesters or four academic years. To meet the normal progress requirement, undergraduate students are expected to enroll in and pass an average of 15 units per semester, completing the 120 units necessary for graduation in four years. The CBE Undergraduate Advising Office and CSUEB Pioneer Coaches will advise and support students making steady progress towards their degrees.

Degree Requirements Unit-Outline

  • A baccalaureate of science degree requires a total of 120 units:
  • The major requirements consists of 58-59 units;
  • General Education (GE) & Graduation Requirements (GR) consists of 57 units;
  • Free Electives may consist of 3-5 units (actual number of free elective units may depend on GE/GR units).

Note: It may be possible to double-count units within the graduation requirements or that a course may satisfy both a graduation requirement and a major requirement.  Students should contact their program advisors for information.
