Japan has one of the world’s largest economies, advanced technology in many areas, and exciting traditional and popular cultures that appeal to people from around the world. Experiencing Japanese culture and language skills are valuable assets in today’s global society. The MLL Japanese Language and Culture Studies minor prepares students for living and working within an intercultural society in industries such as business, government, medicine, education, tourism, journalism, and more.
All students taking a minor in Japanese language and culture are expected to complete a minimum of 15-23 units of coursework: 8-16 lower-division language courses (through intermediate level) and 7-9 upper-division elective units (see Minor Requirements for Japanese Language and Culture Studies).
Students may be exempt from lower division courses. Students may challenge elementary and intermediate courses by exam. Students who test out of the lower division courses will be required to take a fourth upper division course to meet the 15 unit minimum for the minor.
NOTE: Minor students should take all courses for a letter grade.
