MLL 441 - Introduction to Spanish American Literature: 1492 to 1900


Units: 3
Survey of Spanish-American Literature from pre-Colombian texts to 1900. Socio-political, aesthetic, philosophical and literary ideas of the conquest and colonial literature, romanticism, realism, and modernism discussed. Taught in Spanish, readings in Spanish and English.

Equivalent Quarter Course: MLL 3461.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of several historical literary periods, authors, personages, and texts relating to Spanish American literature from pre-Columbian cultures until Spanish American modernism.
  2. Students will build skills in reading comprehension by reading and commenting on primary texts in the original Spanish.
  3. Students will be able to compare and contrast the diversity of the Spanish American literature from the point of view of ethnicity, class, gender and region.
