MLL 163 - Intensive Elementary Mandarin Chinese


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C1
Intensive Elementary Chinese uses electronic input to develop four basic skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Chinese.  Using realistic situations, students will learn pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, Chinese culture, and input Chinese characters via pinyin-Romanization.

Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 8 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-C1 - Lower Division Arts
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Use foundational Chinese grammatical structures
  2. Pronounce Chinese vocabulary with reasonable accuracy
  3. Use culturally appropriate phrases in specific social situations
  4. Write paragraphs using Pinyin characters
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the self and culture by describing important Chinese cultural concepts and traditions
  6. Demonstrate an appreciation of the arts of Chinese culture and humanities using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity
  7. Develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/inquiry
