MLL 431 - Linguistics in American Sign Language


Units: 3
The linguistics of American Sign Language. Structural rules governing ASL grammar. Phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of ASL Linguistics.

Prerequisites: MLL 332.
Equivalent Quarter Course: MLL 3903.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Develop an understanding of the basic concepts in linguistic study.
  2. Understand and be able to explain the terminology unique to linguistics.
  3. Significantly expand ASL vocabulary and conversational skills, expressively and receptively, by participating in an immersion environment.
  4. Learn appropriate interactive strategies in conversation, such as requesting clarification, interrupting, turn taking etc
  5. Demonstrate an increased awareness of the differences and similarities between ASL and English.
  6. Have an understanding of the basic phonology and morphology of ASL.
  7. Be able to notate signs in different transcription systems.
  8. Understand the phonological processes and how they impact ASL.
