MLL 366 - New Chinese Cinema in English Translation


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D; Social Justice
Analyzes the changing forms and cultural significance of cinematic representations in Greater China since the beginning of New Cinema movements in the 1980s; examines how cinematic movements comment on profound social changes.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: MLL 3611.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Identify culturally and historically significant moments and concepts from Chinese 20th and 21st century history.
  2. Analyze the changes to Chinese society that occurred over the 20th century to today and how it impacted Chinese culture.
  3. Analyze representations of Modern and Post-Modern Greater China (Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China) in Chinese cinema.
  4. Evaluate how the representations of Modern and Post-Modern China in Chinese cinema reflect the changing political and cultural climate of the country as a whole.
