MLL 332 - Advanced American Sign Language II Units: 4 Content area will focus on transitioning from communicative competence in discussing concrete subjects to being able to using language in more abstract contexts.
Prerequisites: MLL 331. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Comprehend and converse ASL messages through classroom and electronic means. Express oneself in front of any type of audience with conversational fluency.
- Debate and exchange information and opinions on topics of Deaf culture and related products and compare to other cultures (via Deaf films).
- Collect and exchange information and opinions on topics of distinctive viewpoints of Deaf people.
- Participate and exchange information and opinions on topics of other disciplines.
- Debate and exchange about comparing and contrasting ASL with English.
- Exchange information and opinions in non-classroom conversational experience with Deaf community.
- Also, using ASL to access information about Deaf culture/community that will lead to life-long learning experiences.
- Students will perform grammatical ASL skills such as: Analyze and discuss meanings of ASL semantics, syntax, and grammar.
- Give presentation using increasingly more complex non-manual signals (NMS) for ASL grammatical, emphasis, and emotional purposes.
- Perform structure of ASL grammar correctly such as topic-comment structure, conditional clause, and narrative structure as well as turn-taking techniques.
- Narrate the information using role shifting, spatial agreement, information organization, and using narrative framework.
- Use appropriate handshape for specific ASL classifier and rules of classifiers with real world orientation effectively by using perspectives of signer. Use appropriate and accurate use of conversational regulators.
