Civil Engineering, B.S. Program (120 units)
Program Description
The School of Engineering offers a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis on design, maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction of infrastructure projects. This program is designed for individuals who are planning to advance their knowledge in Civil Engineering and follow career paths in industry, government, consulting, and academia.
Special attention is given to working professionals with classes offered mainly at times convenient to students. Students will take required courses in Structural Analysis, Structural Design, Engineering Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Computer Applications in Infrastructure, Transportation Engineering, Highway and Pavement Design, Sustainability and Green Building. Also, issues in engineering ethics, building design codes, and life cycle analysis are covered. Students will have a broad choice of electives from courses in construction management and engineering to customize their expertise.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering is to prepare effective professionals to design, build, and lead public and private infrastructure projects, prepare a technically capable engineering workforce required for the expected increase in the state’s infrastructure improvement projects, and train high school graduates, transfer students and working professionals to assume leadership roles in civil engineering, consulting, and the construction industry.

ABET Required Learning Outcomes
Students graduating with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Cal State East Bay will have the:
- ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics,
- ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors,
- ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences,
- ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts,
- ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives,
- ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions,

Career Opportunities
An increase in large construction projects is expected, in part stemming from the public spending on California’s infrastructure improvement, the economic growth of the Bay Area, as well as the projected national investment in infrastructure. Therefore, there is considerable demand for engineers to design and build such infrastructure and commercial projects. The construction industry as a whole is one of the largest industries in the nation with a great need for skilled civil engineers. Sample jobs are: licensed engineer, project engineer, staff civil engineer, city engineer, research engineer, project manager, consulting engineer, and more.
Features
The B.S. in Civil Engineering is designed to accommodate full time students as well as working students by conducting class at times convenient to students. The instructors will be selected from industry leaders with significant design/management work experience. Students will have the opportunity to take elective courses in construction management and engineering to broaden their skills.
Admission Requirements
The B.S. in Civil Engineering is open to individuals planning a career or advancing their career in the civil engineering and construction industries and who meet general university requirements for freshmen or transfer students (refer to on-line catalog).
Degree Requirements Unit-Outline
A baccalaureate of science degree requires a total of 120 units:
The major requirements consists of 84 units;
General Education (GE) & Graduation Requirements (GR) consists of 57 units;
Free Electives may consist of 0 units (actual number of free elective units may depend on GE/GR units).
Note: It may be possible to double-count units within the graduation requirements or that a course may satisfy both a graduation requirement and a major requirement. Students should contact their program and AACE advisors for information.
