Pupil Personnel Services Credential: School Psychology Specialization


Program Description

The Pupil Personnel Services Credential, School Psychology Specialization, at CSU East Bay is a three-year, full-time program that is nationally accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).  The credential emphasizes social justice applied to schools and provides a supportive cohort model.  A cohort model is one whereby each entry group of graduate students takes the same classes together and learns collaboratively. The program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) which sets the standards for the Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Psychology.  Faculty recommend student candidates for the credential who successfully meet requirements for academic courses (e.g., grades of “B” or better, school-based service learning experiences, professional performance, passing scores on the Praxis II Examination in School Psychology, and a culminating portfolio project).

The US News and World Report rated school psychology as the number one social service job in 2017. California State University East Bay’s School Psychology credential program prepares professionals to make a difference in their communities through Intervention, Consultation, Assessment, Research, and Education. School Psychology Credential students are professionals-in-training who begin working in the schools at the very beginning of the program and have fieldwork opportunities in more than 20 culturally and linguistically diverse Bay Area school districts. The PPS Credential in School Psychology can be completed at the same time as the M.S. in Counseling, School Psychology concentration.

Admission Requirements

  1. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  2. University application.
  3. Department application.
  4. Official transcripts sent to both the University and the Department of Educational Psychology.
  5. Three academic professional references.
  6. Basic Skills requirement
  7. Certificate of Clearance
  8. A personal statement.
  9. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report.
  10. Complete the prerequisite coursework before Educational Psychology courses begin in fall.

Prerequisite Coursework


The following 0-19 units of prerequisites or their equivalents must be met prior to program admission.  Generally prerequisite units are not counted toward the credential.  See your department advisor for more information:

Other Required Coursework


This coursework is common with the School Psychology concentration within the Master’s in Couseling program. All the following 18 units are also required for the credential.  

Other Graduate & Post-Baccalaureate Degree Requirements


In addition to departmental requirements, every student must also satisfy the University requirements for graduation as described throughout this catalog. These include the 70% unit residence requirement; the five-year rule on currency of subject matter; the minimum number of units in 600-level courses; the “C” minimum grade for each graduate course; the 3.00 cumulative grade point average; and the University Writing Skills Requirement.
