Education, M.S. (Online Program)

General Information

One of the most comprehensive online teaching and learning training programs offered in the world, the M.S. Education, Online Teaching and Learning Concentration (MSEd-OTL) program has been empowering educators, instructors, trainers, and support staff to effectively design and implement online courses since 1999. Our students develop their own online courses or programs using best practices in online teaching and learning.  Student-created courses will be designed for their areas of expertise, the needs of their learners, and their institutional settings. Our program is not cohort-based, with all students taking the same courses each semester. Rather, students can complete the degree by choosing either the Fast Track or Flex Track option. However, each course has weekly assignments and due dates so it is not self-paced.

Career Opportunities

The training and skills acquired in the MSEd-OTL program can transfer into almost any educational or training fields, including: university, community college, K-12, corporate, military, educational administration, curriculum design, technical support, and other fields requiring design, development, implementation, and teaching services.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Online Teaching and Learning Concentration in the M.S. Education, students must meet Cal State East Bay requirements for admission to a graduate program in Education. Students from schools where English is not the primary language of instruction are required to achieve a TOEFL score of at least 213 (550 on the former grading scale) for admission to the program. To earn a Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Online Teaching and Learning (MSEd-OTL), students must complete 10 courses (30 units) as outlined. All courses are 3-semester units.

For admission into the M.S. Education, Online Teaching and Learning Concentration degree program, applicants must do the following:
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Have earned a GPA of 3.0 in the last 90 semester units (or semester equivalent) of upper-division, post-baccalaureate or graduate-level course-work.
  • Have teaching or training experience.

  • Request official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended to be sent to Cal State East Bay. Final official transcripts, showing degree completion, must be received prior to enrollment in classes.
