Multiple Subject and Education Specialist Credential Program
Program Description
The TED/SPED program is designed for candidates interested in an approach to completing all requirements for the Multiple Subject Credential, the Education Specialist Credential (Mild-Moderate Disabilities OR Moderate-Severe Disabilities), and the Master’s Degree in Special Education. Candidates complete the Education Specialist Credential and the Master’s Degree in Special Education in four semesters and an initial summer session. Candidates may then return to complete the remaining requirements for the Multiple Subject Credential.
Content courses contain the latest in research, evidence-based practices and fieldwork experiences and provide candidates with a wide range of practical methods for addressing the diverse general and special education student learning, language and behavioral needs. This program enables credentialed professionals to enhance the lives of individuals with and without exceptional needs, their families and communities.
Supervised fieldwork experiences provide opportunities for candidates to experiences the multiple roles of the Education Specialist in the delivery of services. Candidates may work with students through teaching and assessment, co-teaching, inclusion support and case management.
Credential holders are authorized to teach and deliver services to individuals in grades K-22. The Multiple Subject Credential authorizes the holder to teach all subjects in a self-contained or an elementary school classroom (grades K-6 or K-8). The Education Specialist Credential authorizes the holder to teach any level, grades K-22, and deliver postsecondary transition services, including assessment and supporting services to individuals with disabilities. The program includes authorization to teach English Learners and students with Autism Spectrum Disorders as a part of the course of study..
This dual credential preparation emphasizes collaboration among general education and special education personnel and candidates’ competence with core curriculum. Candidates thus have flexibility to assume a variety of roles during their careers with general and special education.
Career Opportunities
Individuals can provide services to children, youth and their families by being authorized to teach public school students within the general education program at the K-6 or K-8 levels. They may also work as teachers for students and young adults with disabilities in public and private schools, agencies and community colleges. Options for employment include special education positions, such as intervention specialists, inclusion specialists/support providers, learning center teachers, resource specialists, special class teachers, transition specialists, co-teachers and case managers. The Master’s Degree in Special Education prepares candidates for leadership roles at the school site, within the district, SELPA (Special Education Local Planning Area, county office of education and instructional positions at community colleges. It enables candidates to work as lead teachers and department chairs, district specialists, program specialists, support teachers and community college instructors.
Admission Requirements
Applicants may only enter the dual credential TED/SPED program in the summer semester.
Before applying, all applicants should attend a ”Credential Information Session.” Students can register for a session on the Credential Student Service Center (CSSC) website.
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited university,
- Department Application,
- Online University Application,
- Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA,
- Pass the Multiple Subject California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) OR obtain a waiver for the CSET by completing an approved subject matter preparation program at a CSU,
- Statement of Purpose,
- Pass a basic educational skills test approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), such as the CBEST,
- Three letters of recommendation,
- U.S. Constitution course or exam,
- Certificate of Clearance,
- TB test.
Student Standing and Progress Toward Degree
- Completion of courses with a grade of B or higher.
- Completion of the University Writing Skills Test (WST).

In addition to departmental requirements, every student must also satisfy the University requirements for graduation as described throughout this catalog. These include the 70% unit residence requirement; the five-year rule on currency of subject matter; the minimum number of units in 600-level courses; the “C” minimum grade for each graduate course; the 3.00 cumulative grade point average; and the University Writing Skills Requirement.
