Department Statement

The Department of Writing, Languages, and Literatures (WLL) at Cal State East Bay is the home of the English BA, the Spanish BA, and Minors in American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese, Creative Writing, English, French, Japanese, and Spanish. WLL offers its diverse student population a rich array of courses in literature, languages, linguistics, creative writing, and composition. The department’s faculty, hailing from diverse national and academic backgrounds, share their experience and disciplinary knowledge in courses that are engaging, challenging, and meaningful. With courses in American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish, and English, the department fosters in its students an understanding and appreciation of language, literature, and culture including works by and about ethnic and cultural minorities and women. In all of its courses, WLL provides its students with training in the advanced skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking necessary for successful careers in teaching, publishing, interpretation, translation, law, administration, and business.
