Spanish Minor Requirements (15-28 units)

All minor students, regardless of lower-division exemptions outlined below, will be required to complete a minimum of 15 units of CSUEB coursework. See a Modern Language and Literatures (MLL) Department advisor to determine the best path of coursework for you.

Note: Minor students should take all courses for a letter grade.

Lower Division Exemption or Coursework

All Spanish minor students are required to have an intermediate-level understanding of the Spanish language. Incoming students with prior experience with the Spanish language may have some or all of the lower division courses waived. Students may also challenge any of the lower division courses by exam. To determine which lower division coursework to take contact your MLL advisor for exemption procedures and forms. Students who do not achieve any lower division exemptions must take all of the following coursework:

SPAN 141 - Elementary Spanish I: Language and Humanities Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2
SPAN 142 - Elementary Spanish II: Language and Arts Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C1
OR SPAN 146 - Beginning Spanish Language and Culture for Healthcare Professionals Units: 4 ; Breadth Area GE-C2
SPAN 241 - Intermediate Spanish I: Hispanophone Cultures Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2
SPAN 242 - Intermediate Spanish II: Hispanophone American Sociocultural Issues Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-D1-2
OR SPAN 246 - Intermediate Spanish for Healthcare Professionals Units: 4

Upper Division Coursework

All Spanish minor students will be required to take 12 units of advanced language coursework. Choose from the following:

SPAN 341 - Spanish Conversation Units: 4
SPAN 343 - Spanish Composition and Syntax Units: 4
SPAN 344 - Spanish Linguistics and Phonetics Units: 4
SPAN 345 - Spanish Textual Analysis in a Multicultural Context Units: 4

Elective Coursework

All students must choose an elective course(s) to complete the minimum required coursework of 15 units for the minor. Choose from the following list:

SPAN 441 - Introduction to Spanish American Literature: 1492 to 1900 Units: 3
SPAN 442 - Introduction to Spanish American Literature: 1900 to the Present Units: 3
SPAN 444 - Survey Spanish Literature II: 18th Century to Present Units: 3
SPAN 445 - Cultures of Spanish America Units: 3
SPAN 446 - Cultures of Spain Units: 3
SPAN 447 - Latin American Global and Cultural Studies Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C
SPAN 448 - Spanish Global and Cultural Studies Units: 3
MLL 497 - Issues in Modern World Languages and Literatures Units: 3
