Total Blended Program Units (BS + MS) = 139 units (11 double-counted units)
Description:
The Blended BS+MS Program in Biological Sciences is an integrated pathway for students to transition from their undergraduate to graduate study. By earning graduate credits during their junior and senior years, motivated students can complete both degrees in as few as 5 years. Students can gain early access to graduate-level research experience and enhance their career readiness. Ideal candidates are motivated students passionate about biological sciences, seeking to expedite their education without compromising quality, and aiming for advanced research roles, PhD programs, or professional careers in the field.
Double-Counted Coursework:
For Cell and Molecular Biology concentration, 11 units of coursework will be double-counted as follows:
2 units of undergraduate elective credit will be substituted with 2 units of Core graduate classes:
BIOL 601A Foundations of Scientific Research (1 unit) and
BIOL 601B Foundations of Scientific Communication (1 unit), and;
9 units of UD major courses required for the concentration:
BIOL 426 Advanced Molecular and Cell Biology (3 units);
BIOL 427 Molecular and Cell Biology Lab (3 units);
BIOL 428 Genomics (3 units)
will double-count as 9 units of graduate elective credit.
This particular approach takes into account that students in the MS Biological Sciences Program are able to take up to 15 units of upper division courses accepted for major credit towards graduate elective credit.
Admissions Requirements:
All biology undergraduates within our B.S. Program are eligible to apply for the blended BS/MS program as early as the Fall semester of their junior year, if they fulfill the following requirements: complete a minimum of 60 units and no more than 90 units towards the BS degree; complete lower division biology requirements with a GPA of 3.0 or better; have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, or GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 semester units; and, complete all lower division GE requirements. Applications are open from July to March for Fall admission only. A tentative deadline for applications of March 30th of junior year will be set. Admission process as described in Blended Program Student and Advisor Handbook.
