China is one of the oldest continuous civilizations as well as the largest economies in the world, and Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world. Chinese language skills, paired with an understanding of Chinese culture, are valuable assets in today’s global society.  MLL Chinese Language and Culture Studies minor provides students the foundational knowledge needed for careers in business, government, foreign service, education, translation, journalism, and other fields related to the transcultural Chinese region that require (or requiring) Chinese linguistic proficiency and cultural competency.

All students taking a minor in Chinese Language and Culture are expected to complete a minimum of 15 units of coursework: 0-8 lower-division language courses (achieved intermediate level) and 9-15 upper-division elective units.

Chinese Language and Culture Minor Requirements (15-23 units)

Students may be exempt from lower division courses. Students may challenge elementary and intermediate courses by exam. Students who test out of the lower division courses will be required to take a fourth upper division course to meet the 15 unit minimum for the minor.

NOTE: Minor students should take all courses for a letter grade.

Lower Division Exemption or Coursework

All Chinese Language and Culture minor students are required to have an intermediate-level understanding of the chinese language. Incoming students with prior experience with the Chinese language may have some or all of the lower division courses waived.  Students may also challenge any of the lower division courses by exam.  To determine which lower division coursework to take contact your MLL advisor for exemption procedures and forms.  Students who do not achieve any lower division exemptions must take all of the following coursework:

Upper Division Coursework
