Social Science SSMP Program Requirements


The 65-66 unit Single Subject Matter Preparation Program in Social Science is designed for students wishing to earn a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Science following the award of their bachelor’s degree. Students who successfully complete this program of study will be able to verify their subject matter competence as part of their teaching qualifications and will not be required to take the California Subject Examinations for Teachers for Social Science, also known as the CSET tests. A Single Subject Teaching Credential is required in addition to completion of this program for those wishing to teach in middle or high schools. This program has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Completion of the Single Subject Matter Preparation Program in Social Science is certified by the Department of History. The program may be completed by students in any major, but overlaps major requirements in several Social Science fields, including History, Political Science, Ethnic Studies, Geography, Sociology, and Economics. For additional information, contact the Single Subject Matter Preparation Program advisor in the Department of History: Student and Faculty Support Building (SF), Room 442, or http://www.csueastbay.edu/class/departments/history/

Note: No more than six (6) units may be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis.  No more than six (6) units with a grade below “C” may be submitted in fulfillment of any program requirement. To successfully complete the program, a student must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.  Students must successfully complete the Assessment Capstone (History 404) in the final year of their participation in the program.
