PHAP is operated by Continuing Education, in collaboration with the College of Science, and prepares undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students interested in biomedical careers (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary science, graduate nursing, physician assistant, podiatry, physical therapy and selected allied health programs) for application to these doctoral programs. Students are encouraged to review information on the PHAP website to learn more about differences between those categories.
A student interested in entering medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary science, or allied health sciences should contact the PHAP Office at the North Science Building, SC N113 (510-885-4764) for information and registration in the program. The office will direct the student to a preprofessional health advisor to discuss individual course needs and counseling about the requirements for admission to professional schools. Information about specific health and veterinary fields, schools, admission requirements, applications, etc., is available through numerous online documents listed under “Links” at the PHAP website. The national health professional associations (AAMC, ADEA, AACOM, ASCO, AAVMC, etc.) also have listings of schools which may be linked to from their sites.
The Director of PHAP is Dr. Oscar Wambuguh, also a pre-health advisor and professor in health sciences. There are three other pre-health faculty advisors in the program who can be reached for an appointment using the links at the College of Science highlighted below. Students should make an appointment to meet with the advisor as often as necessary. The pre-health advisor engages students in discussions concerning courses, course mix, course load, and volunteer, research, and community service opportunities required by many professional schools. Information about advising appointments can also be obtained by e-mailing email@example.com
