ES 309 - Federal Indian Law and Policy Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-4 History and present application of structural, fuctional, political and legal components of American Indian policies and laws.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-4 - Upper Division Social and Behavioral Sciences Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs). Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division GE Area 4 requirements. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate comprehension of the history of Federal Indian Law - Treaty Era, Allotment, Reorganization, Termination, Self Determination Policies.
- Demonstrate comprehension of the evolution of Federal Indian Policy - Philosophy behind Treaties Era, objectives involving Allotment, resources tied to Reorganization, cost savings tied to Termination, sovereignty tied to Self Determination.
- Identify institutional barriers erected and nurtured through Federal Indian that have worked to marginalize Indigenous nations
- Analytically write focused and well supported statements that address the contemporary application of Federal Indian Law and Policy that maintains or expands Indigenous sovereignty
- Orally present social science founded research that supports the maintenance and expansion of Indigenous sovereignty that navigates the benefits and pitfalls within Federal Indian Law and Policy
- Demonstrate, via writing assignments, a comprehension of the basics of international law and norms pertinent to Indigenous populations since the 1500’s.
