EESC 660 - Advanced GIS in Earth, Environmental and Sustainability Sciences


Units: 3
Advanced tools, data management, and functions in geographic information systems (GIS) for the mapping, monitoring, analysis, management and solution of earth, environmental and sustainability science issues. Use of environmental and digital terrain data and remotely-sensed imagery. Creation of maps and report generation. Lecture Units: 2; Lab Units: 1.

Prerequisites: Departmental approval
Strongly Recommended Preparation: EESC 360 or equivalent
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an advanced working knowledge of industry standard GIS software and how GIS technology is implemented.
  2. Demonstrate advanced proficiency in using GIS tools to create maps for multilayered spatial analysis.
  3. Execute and demonstrate leadership in a research-based analysis of an earth, environmental and sustainability science issue using industry standard GIS software to demonstrate mapping, monitoring, analysis, management and/or solution of that issue.
  4. Demonstrate the skill set required to effectively explain and defend the methodology and outcomes of GIS project to an academic/professional audience.
