SW 300 - Intro to Social Work Theories and Human Behavior in the Social Environment


Units: 4
Introduces social work-relevant theoretical perspectives on human development and behavior across the life span, examining the influence of social, political, historical, and cultural variables. This course covers physiological, psychological, cognitive, and social dimensions from birth through end-of-life.

Prerequisites: Social Work major
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Integrate selected theories of human biopsychosocial-spiritual development and demonstrate an understanding of the historical application of these theories in   foundation generalist social work practice.
2. Transfer this basic knowledge into generalist practice approaches including observations, assessments, and best practice interventions, as they relate to diverse individuals and families across the lifespan.
3. Gain insight into their personal values, behavior, development, and world view and be able to incorporate this insight into effective and ethical generalist social work applications with diverse people across the lifespan.
4. Demonstrate a beginning understanding of the values and ethics that guide culturally competent and responsive generalist social work practice with diverse individuals, families, small groups, and communities across the lifespan.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that have historically led to oppression and social and economic injustice such as race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, age, religion, and ability on individuals and families and their responses to stressors.
