MLL 161 - Elementary Mandarin Chinese I: Language and Humanities


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
The first semester of a one-year sequence in elementary Mandarin Chinese.  An introduction to the basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  A communicative approach to the acquisition of the language with emphasis on the appreciation of the culture.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. To develop basic listening, speaking, recognizing, reading, typing and writing abilities in Mandarin Chinese.
  2. Use foundational Chinese grammatical structures
  3. Identify the basic sounds and tones of Mandarin Chinese, and pronounce Chinese vocabulary with reasonable accuracy
  4. Comprehend and engage in basic conversations to communicate individual, family, group, and contextual information
  5. Use culturally appropriate phrases in specific social situations
  6. Write and type paragraphs using Pinyin and characters
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the self and culture by describing important Chinese cultural concepts and traditions
  8. Demonstrate an appreciation of the arts of Chinese culture and humanities using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity
  9. Develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/inquiry
