SPAN 146 - Beginning Spanish Language and Culture for Healthcare Professionals


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
A communicative approach to the acquisition of the Spanish language with emphasis on the appreciation of the diverse culture and knowing the right lexicon across different Hispanophone cultures in the healthcare field.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-3B - Arts and Humanities (Humanities)
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Prior knowledge of Spanish language.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Speak to patients in Spanish in various situations.
  2. conjugate in the tense verbs that are regularly used in the medical field such as present tense, future, past, subjunctive, perfect tenses and conditional.
  3. understand the healthcare cultural dynamics of the patients you will be in contact with.
  4. conduct medical interviews in Spanish, history taking and physical examinations.
  5. talk about common illness and mental health.
