MLL 163 - Intensive Elementary Mandarin Chinese for Professionals

Intensive Elementary Chinese aims to rapidly develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Using electronic input and Pinyin Romanization, students engage with realistic scenarios while exploring Chinese culture, art, and traditions, emphasizing practical language use in professional contexts.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-3A - Arts and Humanities (Arts)
Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 8 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Apply basic Chinese grammatical structures in speaking and writing for both professional and everyday situations.
  2. Pronounce Chinese correctly using Pinyin, focusing on clear communication in professional contexts.
  3. Use culturally appropriate phrases in social and professional settings, showing an understanding of Chinese etiquette and customs.
  4. Write simple paragraphs using Pinyin and Chinese characters, relevant to students’ professional fields.
  5. Reflect on how Chinese arts and traditions shape personal and professional experiences and express these reflections in Chinese.
  6. Explore and explain the cultural and historical significance of Chinese arts using basic Chinese.
  7. Examine how different cultural, regional, and social identities in Greater China affect the creation and perception of Chinese arts.
  8. Analyze the role of Chinese art in various contexts and explain it in basic Chinese.
