KIN 265 - CPR and First Aid

Units: 2
Adult and pediatric CPR/AED and First Aid. Meets qualifications for Red Cross certification. First Aid and CPR/AED certification. Includes modules in Disaster Preparedness and the use of an epinephrine auto-injector.

Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 4 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Identify and react quickly to life-threatening cardiac and respiratory emergencies in victims of all ages.
Demonstrate the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adult and pediatric victims.
Conduct a thorough assessment of both conscious and unconscious victims of illness or injury, with sensitivity for issues of diversity and cultural difference.
Identify the healthy lifestyle factors that can prevent many medical crises.
Control excessive bleeding, including the use of tourniquets and hemostatic dressings, immobilize fractures, and evaluate the need for advanced medical care.
Describe the psychological and cultural barriers to giving care, and create a personal ethic of preparedness to overcome them.
Take leadership in a rescue situation, collaborate care with team members, improvise with the resources available, and coordinate with advanced medical providers.
Articulate the importance of physical fitness, psychological preparedness and community service as components of effective first aid.
Debrief and evaluate after an incident, identifying best practices and areas for improvement.
