POSC 355 - Global Governance and the United Nations

Evolution of the study and practice of global governance and the United Nations; focus on foreign policies and actions of selected UN member-states; student participation as delegates to a Model UN Conference

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-4 - Upper Division Social and Behavioral Sciences
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs).
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division GE Area 4 requirements (Area D1-2 requirements for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs).
Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 6 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Understand and articulate the theoretical underpinnings of global governance and the real-world operation of the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and international non-government organizations;
  2. Analyze the foundations and operations of existing international organizations, and current debates on human, ecological, security, economic, political, social, and cultural issues as they pertain to selected countries;
  3. Develop an appreciation for, and apply knowledge of, diversity, inclusivity and multicultural competencies to promote equity and social justice at the global level;
  4. Demonstrate expert knowledge of selected countries (their institutions, political processes, and public policies) and of the United Nations and specialized agencies (their goals, missions, and operations) through sustained research;
  5. Demonstrate through oral and written competence, an understanding of the theories, concepts, empirical content related to global governance;
  6. Improve written and oral communication skills used in formal, professional settings;
  7. Generate strategies for negotiations and bargaining; and
  8. Gain practical experience in negotiation and teamwork, and awareness of career opportunities in diplomacy and in international organizations.

  1. analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;

  3. demonstrate an understanding of and ability to effectively plan or conduct research using an appropriate method of the social or behavioral sciences.
