ENGL 204 - Writing About Literature and Culture


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
This course focuses on critical writing about literary and cultural texts. By comparing literary and cultural texts from different historical periods, nations and cultures, students will improve skills in interpretation, critical analysis and written communication.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Articulate their own ideas and interpretations about different literary and cultural texts;
  2. explain the elements of genre and form in different literary and cultural texts;
  3. compare and analyze a range of cultural and literary forms from different historical periods, nations, and cultures;
  4. demonstrate familiarity with different cultural studies theories and texts;
  5. write clear thesis-driven essays about the different literary and cultural texts, demonstrating analytical and persuasive skills; 
  6. write, revise, and edit drafts in response to peer, tutor, and/or instructor feedback.
