SLHS 603 - Advanced Seminar on Articulation and Phonological Disorders Units: 3 The course addresses theoretical background, differential diagnosis and evidence-based intervention for articulation and phonological disorders, including the relationship between phonological disorders and developmental literacy. Bilingual influences will also be considered.
Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology program. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Discuss the difference between articulation vs. phonological disorders and basic premises underlying their treatment.
- Determine differences between typical and atypical speech development patterns in children.
- Compare and contrast theories of phonology and models of speech sound production.
- Incorporate multicultural considerations into the assessment and treatment of articulation and phonological disorders in children.
- Describe formal and informal procedures for the assessment of articulation and phonological disorders in children.
- Conduct speech sound error analysis and develop appropriate goals and treatment plans for children with articulation and phonological disorders.
- Described motor-based approaches for the treatment of articulation disorders.
- Name and describe linguistically-based approaches for the treatment articulation and phonological disorders in children.
- Integrate knowledge of phonological and phonemic awareness in addressing literacy skills in children at risk for or with identified language impairments.
