SOC 425 - Work and Professions Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-4 Analysis of the transformation of the work process in the modern United States from one led by industrial manufacturing to an increasingly de-industrialized workplace of services, product design, advertising and finance.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify foundational theories and concepts in sociology about how to define “work” and the various meanings given to work in society.
- Analyze how contemporary labor market changes have impacted lived experiences of workers and occupational or professional structures.
- Explain what unions do and the importance of worker’s rights historically and in the contemporary moment.
- Describe how workplace inequality impacts diverse groups, including race/ethnicity, class, gender, immigration status, and age.
GE-UD-4. Upper-division Social and Behavioral Sciences Learning Outcomes
- Analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods.
