TED 519 - Biliteracy Methods


Units: 4
Research-based instruction for multilingual learners PK-12. Cultural and historical aspects of multilingualism. Biliteracy methods and approaches that support high degrees of content knowledge / academic language development in the target language and English. Course may be taught bilingually.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
. Examine diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of English speakers, multilingual learners, and special populations in a bilingual/crosscultural classroom setting.

2. Describe methodologically sound research and examine to instructional programs in English and also Spanish and/or other languages adopted by the State Board of Education.

3. Implement comprehensive program of English, Spanish, or other reading/language arts and English Language Development instruction including systematic, explicit and meaningfully-applied instruction in reading, writing, and related language skills that is aligned with the student content and English language development standards.

4. Select methods that incorporate comprehension skills, literature, strategies to promote and guide independent reading that reflects cultural diversity.

5. Explain the importance of the roles of home and community literacy practices with the family as a primary language and cultural resource.

6. Explain the value of a multilingual and intercultural classroom climate and school community and its influence on students’ motivation, participation and achievement.
