ENGL 210 - Banned Books and Contested Narratives Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2; Social Justice A study of selected banned books and contested narratives. Students will study narratives and their respective historical and cultural contexts; examination of power relations and efforts for social justice will be emphasized.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-C2 - Lower Division Humanities, Overlay - Social Justice Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Analyze and interpret various kinds of texts using key concepts
- Analyze literature in its historical and cultural context
- Examine power relations at work in the production of a text
- Discuss literature in a collaborative setting (online or in person)
- Practice Internet and/or library research
- Explain your ideas in a clear manner (written and/or oral) and support your points with textual evidence

- Show appreciation for the humanities using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
- develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/or inquiry; and
- engage in critical self-reflection relating themes in the humanities to the students’ own lives.
