PSYC 432 - Cognitive Psychology Applied to Education Units: 4 Selected topics in cognitive psychology as they apply to educational practice, such as effective methods to learn and retain information, metacognition, reading comprehension, and individual differences in learning. Experiments are described and interpreted, and applications are discussed.
Prerequisites: PSYC 330 or PSYC 340 Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify and explain prominent theories and robust effects in cognitive psychology research as they pertain to educational application (e.g., testing effect/retrieval-practice effect, spacing effect, levels of processing).
- Identify and explain how experimental research in cognitive psychology is conducted and interpret experimental results (e.g., by examining research articles and lecture content).
- Identify and apply tools (strategies) to improve your own study practices.
- Think critically and read critically, specifically in the domain of cognitive psychology
- Demonstrate writing skills through class assignments and a final course paper (draft and final)
- Demonstrate how to think like a cognitive psychologist-by developing informed hypotheses and designing ways to test these predictions.
