ENGL 308W - Writing Bad Bodies


Units: 3; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C; Social Justice; UWR
Course interrogates textual representations of disability, with focus on intersectional identities such as race and gender, and how these representations form perceptions of personhood, and considers who benefits from written disenfranchisement of marginalized bodies, which includes physical and mental disabilities. Must earn C- (CR) or better for UWR credit.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better, completion of second composition with a grade of C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: CR/NC grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Assess constructs of disability and normativity in literature and culture from the civil rights to the present;
  2. Evaluate the symbolic roles of disability in literature and culture using interdisciplinary approaches from the humanities, disability studies, and ethnic studies;
  3. Analyze ways disability, social justice, and the arts and humanities intersect and shape society.
