Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
Differentiate and critique Euro-American narratives of the region from the perspective of AIP scholars;

1. Understand the basic concepts and theories in area studies, comparative politics and international relations such as democratization, patronage, hybrid regimes, developmental state, populism, alliances, security dilemma, among others; 
2. Identify reliable sources of information on the region, and become familiar with current domestic and regional political issues;
3. Demonstrate oral and written competency of theories, analytical approaches, empirical content, and basic research used by scholars in studying the AIP region; 
4. Apply these theories and analytical approaches to real-world scenarios such as territorial conflicts, denuclearization, and terrorism; and,
5. Develop teamwork by creating study groups, working in in-class activities, and in data and news reports data bases for the course.

1. analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;
2. demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply accurately disciplinary concepts of the social or behavioral sciences; and
3. demonstrate an understanding of and ability to effectively plan or conduct research using an appropriate method of the social or behavioral sciences.
