REC 370 - Foundations in Outdoor and Adventure Recreation Units: 3 This course introduced the principles and philosophies of recreation in the outdoors including planning and navigating in outdoors, managing risks and safety, the trends and employment opportunities within outdoor recreation, the benefits of outdoor recreation on our health and well-being, and cultural and social issues in outdoor recreation. Students will also learn about actual outdoor activities such as camping, climbing, and kayaking.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Explain the foundational aspects and historical background of outdoor adventure recreation.
- Recognize practical knowledge on selecting, preparing, and participating in actual outdoor recreation activities.
- Interpret safe outdoor practices with risk management strategies.
- Evaluate outdoor recreation sites from various perspectives (e.g., risk management, visitor service, infrastructure, nature conservation, site development).
- Identify strategies to successfully navigate in the outdoors.
- Describe mindfulness programs and interventions used in the outdoor recreation settings.
- Analyze current issues/topics of concern relevant to the field of outdoor and adventure recreation.
- Identify how culture, power, and social identity are integrated in the experience of outdoor recreation.
