REC 371 - Beg. Backcountry Skills

This course provides an introduction to the foundational skills and knowledge pertinent to safe, comfortable, and human-powered travel in a backcountry environment. The primary focus of this course is preparation for an overnight backpacking trip and will include physical conditioning, selection of equipment, navigation, backcountry ethics, Leave No Trace principles, basic first aid, survival topics, and trip planning. 

Repeatability: Y
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate competency in basic orienteering by using a topographic map and a compass.
  2. Appropriately utilize proper equipment and clothing for a safe and enjoyable backpacking trip.
  3. Identify and demonstrate Leave No Trace Ethics.
  4. Display competency in backcountry travel, backcountry camping ethics, and basic outdoor living techniques.
  5. Perform as a contributing member of a group on a sustainable and environmentally conscious course.
