MUS 638 - History and Philosophy of Music Education Units: 3 Study of historical and philosophical trends in music education, with an emphasis on their application to current practices, scholarship, and policy in music teaching and learning.
Prerequisites: Department consent. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Read complex texts, create original arguments, analyze the arguments of others, and express these criticisms orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate knowledge of major philosophers in music and music education, their relevant concepts, theories, methods, and historical contexts.
- Relate significant significant topic in the history and philosophy of music education to current events in K-12 music education.
- Demonstrate knowledge of major historical movements and events in music education and relate them to modern movements and events in music education.
- Cultivate an appreciation for a diversity of ideas and values across time and for human difference in areas such as: religion, culture, ethnicity, race, class, sexuality, and gender.
