MLL 111 - Speaking of Love: Oral Communication in Multicultural Setting Units: 3 Emphasizes the development of English oral communication skills and the delivery of various types of speeches. The course introduces the preparation and presentation skills used in public speaking and how to participate effectively in public discourse with multicultural sensitivity.
Repeatability: May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Hybrid. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Develop and present clearly spoken messages in English; Practice effective listening and speaking skills;
- Present oral messages clearly and effectively using relevant, critical, and sufficient supporting evidence;
- Understand and value differences in various communication styles, forms, contents, and contexts; describe the social and political significance of communication.
- Select and use effectively appropriate techniques and materials to support ideas and to motivate and persuade others.
- Evaluate contexts, attitudes, values, and responses of different/cultural audiences
- Understand the influence of cultural, linguistic, and social context in the process of oral communication;
- Analyze the linguistic, psychological, and cultural bases of communication and how communication operates within and across a wide range of social-linguist-cultural contexts.
