SPAN 446 - Cultures of Spain


Units: 3
A study of the diverse cultures of Spain through a variety of texts (fictional and non-fictional) and manifestations of popular culture illustrating Spain’s philosophical ideas and its artistic, political, social movements. Taught in Spanish for Spanish majors and/or English. Readings in Spanish and English.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better; and MLL 343.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the formative cultures of the Iberian peninsula in its multicultural legacy and present.
  2. Student will be able to recognize important ideological, cultural, sociopolitical, geographic, and historic factors that have contributed to the formation of the diverse cultures of Spain.
  3. Student will be able to identify and discuss the major historical movements and political developments in Spain from the formation of the state to its present as a member of the European Community.
  4. Student will be able to understand the relationships between Spain, the Americas, and other parts of the world in the context of colonialism, postcolonialism, and globalization under the new approaches of cultural studies.
