SPAN 441 - Introduction to Spanish American Literature: 1492 to 1900 Units: 3 Survey of Spanish-American Literature from pre-Colombian texts to 1900. Socio-political, aesthetic, philosophical and literary ideas of the conquest and colonial literature, romanticism, realism, and modernism discussed. Taught in Spanish, readings in Spanish and English.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of several historical literary periods, authors, personages, and texts relating to Spanish American literature from pre-Columbian cultures until Spanish American modernism.
- Students will build skills in reading comprehension by reading and commenting on primary texts in the original Spanish.
- Students will be able to compare and contrast the diversity of the Spanish American literature from the point of view of ethnicity, class, gender and region.
