SPAN 141 - Elementary Spanish I: Language and Humanities Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2 Introduction to speaking, understanding, reading, and writing Spanish. A communicative approach to the acquisition of the language with emphasis on the appreciation of the culture.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Engage in conversations using level-appropriate grammatical structures.
- Demonstrate understanding of level-appropriate spoken Spanish produced by Spanish speakers of diverse origins.
- Write simple to moderately complex sentences using level-appropriate grammatical structures and organize them into cohesive paragraphs.
- Read and comprehend level-appropriate authentic texts and videos.
- Identify and discuss diverse traditions, customs, and values of the Hispanic world.
- Compare and contrast the traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic world with characteristics of their own culture
C2. Humanities Learning Outcomes
- Show appreciation for the humanities using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
- develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/or inquiry; and
- engage in critical self-reflection relating themes in the humanities to the students’ own lives.
