PHYS 305 - Environmental Health Science Electromagnetic and Nuclear Radiation

Units: 3
Focus on the fundamental elements of electromagnetic radiation and nuclear radiation and their connections to environmental health science.

Prerequisites: PHYS 137 or both PHYS 126 and completion of GE area B4.
Credit Restrictions: Not for Physics majors.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Students will be able to differentiate between electromagnetic and nuclear radiation.
  2. Students will be able to describe electromagnetic radiation in the wave model of light and in the particle model, as well as be able to use the laws of geometric optics to predict the behavior of light.
  3. Students will be able to differentiate between ionizing electromagnetic radiation and non-ionizing radiation.
  4. Students will understand the dangers associated with various forms of electromagnetic radiation.
  5. Students will be able to describe the types of nuclear radiation and understand the physics of safety mechanisms and protocols associated with nuclear radiation.
