THEA 323 - Shakespeare on Film

Units: 3
Modern interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays in the film medium. Critical analysis and interrogation of these works as they apply to contemporary socio-cultural concerns.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Explain the metaphor, symbolism, and meaning in a Shakespearean soliloquy in the context of the play and surrounding scenes
Think and write critically about filmed versions of Shakespeare’s works.
Apply sociocultural and political aspects of Shakespeare’s works, as adapted on film to contemporary issues and debates
Quote Shakespeare dramatically in public presentations.
