GEOG 354 - China


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D
China as a concept and a rising world power; geographic survey of  China’s changing physical and cultural landscapes; recent decades of economic reforms and social transformation; special focus on energy and environmental issues, demographic shifts, and globalization.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Identify major features of China’s physical landscape and urban-industrial areas .
  2. Describe and explain the cultural paradox and geographical complexity of China as a country and as a concept.
  3. Analyze the impacts of China’s recent economic transformation and the changing balance of power in the Western Pacific.
  4. Demonstrate working knowledge of China’s environmental challenges and the constraints the country faces regarding future economic development.
