NURS 361 - Health Promotion Units: 2 This course provides a framework for exploration of health promotion principles and provides holistic approaches to disease prevention and maintenance of health and wellness for diverse populations.
Co-requisites: NURS 362. Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Provide definitions of health and health promotion and explore theoretical concepts of health and wellness in diverse populations.
- Examine the theoretical and practical dynamics of behavioral change from health- promotion perspective, including concepts of self-efficacy, resilience, and adherence.
- Discuss the importance of health literacy, health inequities, genetics, and social determinants in health promotion.
- Explore the nurse’s role in health promotion through effective communication, introducing concepts that include: differentiation, boundary setting, trauma informed care and motivational interviewing.
- Analyze strategies for creating a health promotion plan to address chronic diseases.
- Evaluate research and evidence-based practice in health promotion practice, and the importance of validated health screening tools.
- Examine health promotion policy, including Healthy People 2030, and the role of US Preventative Task Force (USPTF).
