MUS 317 - Improvisation Techniques


Units: 1
A course focusing on developing soloing techniques idiomatic to the bebop and post-bop  traditions. Includes jazz theory, analysis and performance of key transcriptions of bebop and post-bop masters as well as in-class application of the fundamental devices employed in modern  jazz improvisation.  

Prerequisites: MUS 112, MUS 116.
Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 4 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. introduce instrumentalists and vocalists to the fundamentals of jazz improvisation
  2. The study and application of jazz theory
  3. play various scales and modes, arpeggios, patterns for memorization, and basic chords on the piano
  4. the study of melodies in a variety of settings as well as memorized transcriptions from important recordings in jazz
  5. Complete various exercises emphasizing the swing feel in jazz.
  6. Develop an audible comprehension of jazz harmony through ear-training exercises
