SPAN 442 - Introduction to Spanish American Literature: 1900 to the Present


Units: 3
Socio-political, aesthetic, philosophical and literary ideas examined in contemporary Latin American literature. Prose, poetry and drama of the 20th and 21st century, including latest development in postmodernity, postcoloniality and cultural studies.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better; and MLL 343.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of several historical literary periods, authors, personages, and texts relating to Spanish American literature from Modernism to the present.
  2. Students will build skills in reading comprehension by reading and commenting on primary texts in the original Spanish.
  3. Students will be able to compare and contrast the diversity of Spanish American literature from the point of view of ethnicity, class, gender and region.
