MUS 414 - Contemporary Orchestration and Arranging


Units: 3
Course devoted to fundamentals of instrumentation and arranging for contemporary band and orchestral instruments. The study of basic elements (range, transposition, timbre) of each instrument will be followed by examination and analysis of orchestration ‘problems’ and solutions from repertoire.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. gain all necessary skills to arrange or compose for any ensemble
  2. develop intimate knowledge of the characteristics of every orchestral instrument
  3. recognize and recreate standard scoring patterns
  4. develop a concept of arranging as composition
  5. strengthen the inner ear and auditory ideation
