SLHS 609 - Motor Speech Disorders in Adults and Children Units: 3 Differential diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of the dysarthrias, apraxia of speech, and other speech and voice disorders deriving from acquired and developmental neuropathologies in adults and children.
Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology program. Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Demonstrate understanding of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological bases for speech production and how this changes across the lifespan.
- Describe the nature and possible etiologies of neuromotor speech disorders, including apraxia of speech and the various categories of dysarthria.
- Describe the principles and methods involved in evaluating clients with neuromotor speech disorders.
- Demonstrate the ability to employ instrumental and non-instrumental procedures for assessment of dysarthria.
- Integrate client history, medical, and assessment data to form appropriate diagnoses, prognoses, and rationales for intervention and management plans.
- Evaluate treatment efficacy and make decisions regarding continuations of therapy, discharge and referrals.
- Integrate professional, ethical, cultural competence, and reimbursement issues in service delivery.
- Demonstrate professional oral and written skills.
