SLHS 609 - Motor Speech Disorders in Adults and Children


Units: 3
Differential diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of the dysarthrias, apraxia of speech, and other speech and voice disorders deriving from acquired and developmental neuropathologies in adults and children. 

Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology program.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate understanding of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological bases for speech production and how this changes across the lifespan.
  2. Describe the nature and possible etiologies of neuromotor speech disorders, including apraxia of speech and the various categories of dysarthria.
  3. Describe the principles and methods involved in evaluating clients with neuromotor speech disorders.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to employ instrumental and non-instrumental procedures for assessment of dysarthria.
  5. Integrate client history, medical, and assessment data to form appropriate diagnoses, prognoses, and rationales for intervention and management plans.
  6. Evaluate treatment efficacy and make decisions regarding continuations of therapy, discharge and referrals.
  7. Integrate professional, ethical, cultural competence, and reimbursement issues in service delivery.
  8. Demonstrate professional oral and written skills.
