COMM 104 - Interpersonal Communication


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-A1
Study of principles of oral communication within interpersonal encounters. Emphasizes how to analyze communicative behavior and to practice applied listening and speaking strategies for improving oral communication skills and relationships in the interpersonal contexts of work, family, friendship, and romance. Must earn C- (CR) or better for GE credit.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Recognize the usefulness of good communication skills in all areas of your life.

2. Learn theories about the interacting elements of interpersonal communication and know how they affect you and your conversation partner(s).

3. Understand what occurs when you communicate and, through practical exercises, come to realize what helps you to communicate effectively.

4. Gain greater awareness of the diversity of communication styles and methods that you may encounter.

5. Find which elements of communication are most challenging for you and learn ways to improve your interpersonal skills.
