Theory and research from the psychiatric and psycho-pharmacological disciplines used to increase counselors’ knowledge of the medical treatments for adult and child psychological and developmental disorders. The interface between psychotherapy and these medications.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

To differentiate between the major classifications of psychotropic medications.
To explain common prescribed psychotropic medications and the rationale for treatment selection.
To describe the basic principles of drug action and metabolism.
To assess the importance and indications for referrals for medication evaluation.
To develop working collaborative relationships with other health care providers within a biopsychosocial framework in order to provide better client/patient care.
To recognize fundamental concepts of neurobiology.
To discuss the mind-body connection.
To prepare to educate clients/patients and their families regarding prescribed psychotropic medications.
To evaluate controversial topics in the current psychopharmacological treatment of mental health patients.
